I have a '95 corolla with 1.6L engine. I've been getting bad mileage on the car. On a full tank (i believe its a 50L tank) i can get about 450km. That is about 60% city and 40% highway driving. That doesn't seem very good to me so i've recently changed the Fuel Filter, Spark Plugs, Wires, Distributor Cap, and PCV valve. Still no change in the gas mileage. Any suggestions on what i should do next? The car has been getting oil changes regularly and air filter has been changed when needed too. Is the O2 sensor a good thing to go after next? i don't want to spend $100 on an O2 and find out it didn't do anything... I was thinking of cleaning the Throttle Body next. Any ideas?
Do you have the manual or automatic. The 1.6L actually gets worse mileage than the 1.8L when the car is an automatic because it is a 3 speed instead of 4.
With my 94 1.8L, I found running some Seafoam through the engine helped to increase mileage (I am currently at 33/34MPG (~7L/100km) with a good mix of city/highway and some agressive driving). I know it is not sold in Canada, but there is probably something similar, or it could be ordered online and shipped to you.

Yes, mine is a automatic and i really hate the 3 speed tranny with a passion!!!
So what would a fair number be for this car? Is what i'm getting right now reasonable?
500km on a full tank (50L) gives around 10L/100km (~23MPG)
One thing i notice when driving around is that the gas needle moves up and down very often. Is this common or is my sending unit on the way out? The last time the gas guage was on E and the light was on for low gas and when i went to fill up i could only put 38L in the tank. Does that sound like my sending unit is faulty?
i calculate fuel mileage from a full tank to refill. lets say 450 km then i put in 38L to refill the tank. so 38L / 450km = .084444 * 100 = 8.4L/100 if thats true thats not too bad for mileage thats about what the car should get
Energuide: says
3spd 1.6L: 9.1 city 7.3 hwy
Knowing this id say your just where you should be!

Thanks for that info rolla guy! I guess my car is running ok....
I used to have an old '89 cavalier with a 2.8L engine and same size fuel tank and i would get the same mileage on that car as this corolla which is why i started to question the mpg since the motors are totaly different in size. This saves me from spending additional money for parts i don't really need.
That was basically what I got out of my 4AGE when I was travelling from Oshawa to Mississauga daily, about 525km the most out of a full tank highway. I wasn't really going slow though, 120-140km/h. Right now I'm doing half city, half highway driving so I get about 450kms out of a tank, if that.
I'd say give the car a tune up and see how it goes, a bad catalytic converter will also cause bad mileage, which is the problem I have right now.

Do you have the gauge cluster with a tachometer? I just replaced my spedo-only one with a cluster that had a tach and I notice the needle on the new gas guage likes to bounce around a lot. It will settle down on the accurate level if I drive straight for a while, but it definetly moves more than the older larger gauge.
As for the mileage, you should still be getting somewhat better than that even with the 3-speed. Make sure youre not using premium gas! Ive used it twice and it kills my mileage.

If you go to any of the performance shops see if you can buy a can of BG-44K. Its fuel system cleaner. There is nothing that will clean fuel deposits better than this stuff. I agree.... you are getting pretty good mileage for around town. The best I had around town was 27.4 mpg but that was before I dropped in the 20vST.

My cluster doesn't have the tach. Just the big ass speedo right in the middle so i can see how slow i'm going.
