0w-30

I have a 2000 Corolla, I was wondering if anyone on this forum is using 0W-30 motor oil in their engine, if so, any problems. The reason why I ask is because I want to switch for the winter but I am afriad to because of the fact that the owner's manuel does not say anything about 0W-30, it only states to use 5W-30. The car has 184,000 Km on it.

I don't see the need to go with a lower viscosity oil, 5W30 is already low enough for winter duties. That and the fact that we haven't had a good enough winter to need such type of oil.

I agree, Ren. 5W-30 is the ideal viscosity for the Corolla.

Did they even have 0-30 when the owners manual was printed? Its more your choice than anything else. Either one is fine.

My 2002 manual mentions about 0w30, I will double check it again tonight. I think it says it only recommend in the winter where temperature reach below -20 degrees.

Canada

thanks, for the responses. I live in Toronto. Last year winter was not really what real winter is in Canada. Having said that, it does get kind of cold though... I have been using 5W-30 for the life of the car, but noticed that Mobil 1 prices here have gone up a lot. In addition the regular mobil 1 bottles do not have a API cerfication anymore. I want to make the switch to German Castrol (its the same price if not cheaper). The problem lies with the fact that it only comes in 0W-30 and not 5W-30, which worried me a bit, since I don't know too much about oil.

If anyone is intrested in the forum on German Castrol and its benefits/drawbacks, it can be found at:

http://theoildrop.server101.com/foru...e=0#Post733338

and more here

http://theoildrop.server101.com/foru...d=UBB51&page=0

I think I will give it a shot..

Anyone else have an opinion?

Hey Ghost, you need to talk to Tnmk about amsoil. They make a 0-30 and its called severe duty. Its suppose to be good for up to 35,000 miles or one year. Now lots of ppl are very skeptical about that. Some folks cant get past the old way of doing things, the 3,000 mile oil change and mineral oil. Anyway just thought I would put that out there. I use it too, however I dont wait a full year to change it.

I just go to the dealer and get my oil change done.. whatever brand Toyota uses to call their own is what goes in my car basically.
