Small Port Questions

Specifically the MAP based version

-did they only come in MAP based?

-Besides the Prism GSI (i think) what else did they come in?

-for the most part are big port parts interchangeable with the smallport?

-Are JDM versions the same as USDM versions?

Im contemplating dumping the old Smoke factory, im getting really sick of the bullshit with the 7afe so i was thinking if i could get a USDM wiring harness and ECU from a wrecker then Buy a low KM smallport id be there?

-Smallports only came MAP based in Japan, in north america they're all still AFM sensored.

-They were available in Prizm GSi and in the Corolla GTS in north america.

-I'm actually trying to figure that out myself, some guys on dorikaze have stated that the smallport will run with the bigport's plumbing, ecu and sensors.

-Look at the first question and there's your answer.. AFM sensored in NA and MAP sensored in Japan, 130hp as opposed to 140hp in MAP version.

Same here, my project has come to a standstill for this reason. Others say that you need to use the smallport injectors and by-pass a resistor box?

I've heard that one before too.. I'd like to see some actual smallport hybrid people post what they got.

I know Thomas runs his smallport with the 4AFE ECU, can't remember what else he's got though.

i have heard the Prism GSI is MAP but good luck finding one... that leaves me with the Corolla GTS... What years was the smallport available?

Im interested in the smallport because i can get parts in north america, and i can use my freshly rebuilt C52 tranny

Other than the AFM / MAP does anyone else know of any differences i think i would wanna use a low KM JDM engine but use all USDM, ecu's, and wiring for the lack of availability from the JDM wreckers...

The "JDM" map engines are still only rated at 130hp (don't know where you got 140 from).

And yes the big port setup will run the smallport, gotta watch you timing as you won't have a knock sensor that way, and the won't make as much power (not by alot though). A few of the drift guys over here have this setup.

Couple of links I've found in my previous searches

http://arda.dktek.com/4ages.htm

http://my.tele2.ee/levintrueno/engine/engine.htm

I had a few others with the same rating showing but I think the pages are now down. I think club4ag also has a rating for it as 140hp and 130hp for the AFM version.

Even with a rating of 130hp, the smallport still feels as slow as the bigport to me.

there's been a bit of misinformation thus far.....

there were both afm and map based versions all around the world.... generally there's more map based versions outside of the US..... however, there are the very few *rare* 1992 geo prizm gsi's that ARE map based here in the US....

i personally haven't seen one (haven't even seen a 1992 yet) but i know people whom i can trust who have seen them

Quote:
-Besides the Prism GSI (i think) what else did they come in?
in the US they came only in the 1990-1991 corolla gts and the 90-92 geo prizm gsi.... if there's no rear or side badging on the prizm then some clues are painted bumpers (except LSI's also came with painted bumpers) and a logo with the 'negative space' red in color

Quote:
-for the most part are big port parts interchangeable with the smallport?
in 1988 the bigport changed.... so the question isn't straight forward..... the crank, rod, pistons, and piston pins are different from 1987 bigports and 1988 bigports..... the block of the smallport reselmbes the 1988-1989 bigport block.... but has higher compression pistons, connections for oil squirters, and an oil drainback for the head

as for the electronics.... the smallports used high ohm & higher flowing (and a slightly higher rated FPR) injector..... it's also a non-tvis setup.... so the end result of running a smallport on bigport electronics is you end up running it a bit leaner than the smallport electronics would.... and there's a 'bump' in power (ie, the curve goes flat) when t-vis would open.... the bigport electronics expect a change in the airflow at ~4500 rpm's (when t-vis opens) and it never happens....

Quote:
-Are JDM versions the same as USDM versions?
yeah.... the only unexpected thing might be that you get a smallport with a flexplate rather than a flywheel..... though (again, rare) gsi's did come in auto's

depends on how much work you want to go through..... but on my ae92 i did go the easy route.... i chose a smallport because of it's lack of t-vis and it's higher ohm injectors..... after modifying the 4afe's ecu to allow for a higher rev limit (and modifying the harness to move the alternator, move the distributor, and change ignitors) it was pretty much plug and play.... my only issue was that the 4afe (early) TPS isn't a pot style switch and the 4age's is.... but your car should have a pot style switch (which is a good thing)

So just to clarifiy,

Quote:
it will run find with the bluetop ecu and injectors and sensors
just use all manifolds from the small port and also the fuel rail.
Doesnt run lean
makes good power could go as high as 90kw@wheels in stock form with this setup

No GSi was map based in north america dude, that's a common misconception that people seem to believe, all GSi's I've ever seen were AFM based.

i personally know people to see them (in stock form) on some 1992 models..... you can post as many pics as you want of airflow meter setups.... doesn't mean they all were....
