there's been a bit of misinformation thus far.....

there were both afm and map based versions all around the world.... generally there's more map based versions outside of the US..... however, there are the very few *rare* 1992 geo prizm gsi's that ARE map based here in the US....
i personally haven't seen one (haven't even seen a 1992 yet) but i know people whom i can trust who have seen them

-Besides the Prism GSI (i think) what else did they come in?
|
in the US they came only in the 1990-1991 corolla gts and the 90-92 geo prizm gsi.... if there's no rear or side badging on the prizm then some clues are painted bumpers (except LSI's also came with painted bumpers) and a logo with the 'negative space' red in color

-for the most part are big port parts interchangeable with the smallport?
|
in 1988 the bigport changed.... so the question isn't straight forward..... the crank, rod, pistons, and piston pins are different from 1987 bigports and 1988 bigports..... the block of the smallport reselmbes the 1988-1989 bigport block.... but has higher compression pistons, connections for oil squirters, and an oil drainback for the head
as for the electronics.... the smallports used high ohm & higher flowing (and a slightly higher rated FPR) injector..... it's also a non-tvis setup.... so the end result of running a smallport on bigport electronics is you end up running it a bit leaner than the smallport electronics would.... and there's a 'bump' in power (ie, the curve goes flat) when t-vis would open.... the bigport electronics expect a change in the airflow at ~4500 rpm's (when t-vis opens) and it never happens....

-Are JDM versions the same as USDM versions?
|
yeah.... the only unexpected thing might be that you get a smallport with a flexplate rather than a flywheel..... though (again, rare) gsi's did come in auto's

Im contemplating dumping the old Smoke factory, im getting really sick of the bullshit with the 7afe so i was thinking if i could get a USDM wiring harness and ECU from a wrecker then Buy a low KM smallport id be there?
|
depends on how much work you want to go through..... but on my ae92 i did go the easy route.... i chose a smallport because of it's lack of t-vis and it's higher ohm injectors..... after modifying the 4afe's ecu to allow for a higher rev limit (and modifying the harness to move the alternator, move the distributor, and change ignitors) it was pretty much plug and play.... my only issue was that the 4afe (early) TPS isn't a pot style switch and the 4age's is.... but your car should have a pot style switch (which is a good thing)
