A little help?

Hi, thanks for reading. I own a 92 corolla and the radiator fan has recently stopped working. Thinking small, I figured it was the fuse, and pulling it out, i saw that it was broken so I replaced it. Upon putting a new one in, the fan started right up, so I called it a night and didnt bother any more. Coming home today I noticed my fan hadnt kicked on a single time and that my temperature gauge was hitting pretty high. What should I check next and could it be something more serious than having to replace the fan?

Could be the Thermo switch for the fan, its ontop of the thermostat housing. also check all the wiring for the fan.

Did you re-check the fuse?
Could be a short that is blowing the fuse.

Thanks guys. What I ended up doing was just rewiring it where i ran one wire to my terminal on my battery and the other to a fuse thats only hot when i turn the key. I checked everything I could find to check -including rechecking the fuse- but couldnt find anything, so I figured this was the next best thing. Thanks!

Ok. So now I have another issue. I had it wired so it came on all the time with the key being turned. But now it comes on, but doesnt stay on. All of my connections are secure and should be fully functional. Any ideas?

thought about that, but if I had killed it you wouldn't think it would start up. But who knows? Thanks for the idea.

After the fan tuns off check with a meter if its still getting 12volts.
My guess is what ever you whired into turns off after a while.

Shouldn't wear the fan out for quite a while. Mine was still fine after being wired on for 2 years. (1980 mirage)

Well.. running it constantly wont kill it, yes it was designed to run even constantly. The fact that it cuts out, is only a convenience thing provided by the thermostatic switch to keep the engine quicker at the operational temp. Thermostat being the main engine temperature controlling device.

Maybe there is resistance in the motor possibly from being shorted out which means it would start running then stop cause there isn't enough power to keep it running only at the start up since there would be a surge

If it gets hot in traffic..ie red light to red light then most likely its the water pump.
If it gets hot while driving on the open road like the highway than its more likely to be a clogged radiator.
If the thermostat doesnt work try one of these. A radiator flush is real cheap and easy to do anyway. Might be worth doing anyway before it gets real cold.

alright. We've drained every bit of anti-freeze out of my car and refilled it thinking maybe that was the issue -no luck-. It's not really a matter of red light to red light or on the highway, it's more or less that I can make it back and forth to school morning and afternoon and thats it. I like 2 miles from my school, but pretty much anything more than that causes it to over heat. We've replaced the thermostat -but my dad being a pompous ass says "do it again"- so I'm going to replace it again as well as my radiator cap. The radiator its self was replaced in May.
