brake lights always on

i seem to have an issue with my 1994 corolla. the brake lights are always on if the headlights are on and if the headlights are off then when i hit the brakes the guages light up as if the headlights were turned on. i'm not quite sure where to begin to diagnose this problem. if anyone could help me that would be great. thank you.

Brake light switch, that the brake pedal arm hits, probably has gone bad..

if you can get and afford the factory switch get that one, if you can't get the factory replacement, grab one from autozone or your local auto parts store..

You should be so lucky if it's only a fuse

Dealer price- at least $60.00 Auto Parts Store- $12.00 You do the math.

If it is the BLS make sure you check the little rubber boot that the switch presses against. Sometimes that rubber boot can wear out and the switch could still be ok.

My dads switch went bad on our ES300. The lights wouldnt turn on at all. Not exactly sure how much it cost but I did know that he was also blowing fuses. We got that fixed and the lights still didnt work and sourced problem to the switch.

Check the brake light bulbs in the taillights what can happen is the filaments fuse togeather and back feed the opposing circuit ie regular lighting. I would start there, also may want to add some di-electric grease to sockets to prevent corrosion which seems to be a problem

Sounds like an overloaded circuit.

sounds to me like the amps ground was backfeeding voltage into the tail lights.
