1991 corolla problems

i recently bought a 91 corolla for 100 bucks. had to fix a few things on it but it runs great, what oil weight should i use in it meaning it get cold here in idaho and it has 205k miles? anyways, my fuelguage doesn't work. i filled the tank and the guage is below E. how could i go about fixing this? also my cruise control works fine during day driving, but if i turn on the headlights i can get the light to light up on the cruise but it fails to work, any ideas on how to troubleshoot this? thanks guys.

Well, for the oil I'd run a 5w30. I've got an 88 Corolla and I'm running a 5w30 high mileage oil, might be worth considering in your case. As for your fuel gauge, does your low fuel light work? If the low fuel light works but the gauge itself doesn't then I suspect a problem with the gauge, otherwise it's probably a sending unit problem. The cruise control problem I have no idea about.

Rare to even find a Rolla with CC. If I ever get hold of one I may keep it. I hate long drives w/o. Fuse? Cable ? check around the simple things. In 91 they did'nt run off VSS? Since I hav'nt seen one I dunno but check the wiring (from a book or this site) and see how it's activated and gets a reading.

the cruise works so long as i don't turn my lights on. i turn them on and the cruise fails to work. does that brake rubber boot thing have anything to do with the lights? cause other than that it works fine.

All GTS I've seen seem to have Cruise control. The sedans are always a pick and chose deal.

I cant see how the brakes or the brakelight switch, or the rubber boot would have anything to do with the headlights or how the headlights affect your CC. Yeah if you push the brakes, the cruise is suppose to release, but whats all that got to do with the headlights?
