I've had this problem with my '90 and apparently I don't know how to fix it. I took the whole belt assembly out of the car and examined it. It seemed to retract fine. I cleaned the belt off ( and it still retracted fine). I put it back in the car and it didn't retract. My theory is that it has something to do with the bend it makes coming through the bracket on the side of the seat. In working seatbelts, I always have the impression that the belt is twisted. I put the belt though the bracket so it didn't look twisted. It doesn't retract well. Let me know if you figure this one out.

Just a heads up that I'm "ditto" on this one.

I've got a '95 Prizm & same story. They don't retract worth a crap. When I get into my '98 Camry or '98 Ford F150 I feel like the belts are on "super" retract 'cuz they retract so well & I realize how pleasant it is to have a retracting seatbelt.

I've just kind of gotten into the habit of playing the "jerk & release" thing repeatedly 'til it goes back enough to keep from dangling out the car door.......LOL!!!!

I'm thinkin' it's the coil spring inside just getting loose over time. I'm sure a new belt assembly would work like new but who wants to buy new seatbelts...............meh!
