Need All 1.6L Folks To Pleease Check Your Motor!!! Pleeeeze....
So I had to replace the O2 sensor.........(air/fuel sensor to the tune of $200 to be exact!!!)......on my '98 Camry 5sfe. So I decided to look under the hood of my '95 Prizm (1.6L). Well, it's in about the same place (front/center) and there's definiltely an O2 sensor in there.............BUT...........
The wire sticks out about 6" and simply ends. My guess is that somebody simply cut the end off and the O2 sensor is simply plugging the hole that would otherwise be spewing exhaust out the exhaust manifold.
I don't have a CEL or any other signs..........(perhaps I could ask for better MPG, but it's not bad).
Do people do this ofteN??
Consequences???
Smog issues??? (Apparently it passed smog when I bought it from the dealer, so that one's reeeeally got me curious).
The CEL should be on. Try checking if the light on the dash works for the CEL. With the key on, engine off, it should be lit. If not, then the bulb is out or was removed. With the O2 sensor disconnected, the vehicle is stuck in open loop. A/F ratio will never go stoichiometric, leading to poor gas mileage and slowly damaging the Cat converter. As far as smog check, if it doesn't fail tailpipe, it would definitely fail visual (disconnected sensor) and functional (bulb check on CEL on dash) if the bulb for CEL doesn't work.
I checked to see if the CEL light was OK, and it is.
?????????
Yup........I turn the key on before starting the car and the CEL light (along with all the other dash lights) is working just fine. And as soon as I start the car, the CEL goes off (along with the other dash lights).
it's a 95... so it's not obdII..... jump the diagnostics connector to see if any codes are stored.... a lot of the time you can get a code, but it won't actually throw the light (like my ae92.... has 2 codes... 1 for o2 and another for no TPS, but the light stays off)

I might just have been an idiot.........(though now I've got a new question).
OK..........what looked like an O2 sensor might or might not be. I've noticed that there are ......TWO!!!!!!!
(Yes, I'm familiar w/ pre-cat & post-cat)
I have the 1.6L 4-cyl motor.
There's one on the side.......(the one with the clipped wire).....and the wire coming out of that one is very small and looks singular. It doesn't look like a typical 2-wire lead coming out of an O2 sensor.
And there's what NOW apperas (to me) to be the MAIN O2 sensor.....further down on the exhaust manifold and with a typical 2-wire lead coming off.........very much uncut & connected properly to its connector........., but it points forward toward the front of the car and appears a bit larger than whatever the heck sensor is sticking up higher out of the side of the manifold.
Hmmm...........well, it'll probably take a pic to show you what I mean.
I was only comparing it to my '98 Camry (5sfe) which has the A/F (newer O2 sensor) sitting in the front & fairly high up on the exhaust manifold.
Whereas this one is much lower..........(about as low as the bottom of the radiator).........but the one with the cut wire is up around the height of the middle of the radiator and it points to the side (battery side) of the engine bay. Perhaps it's like an exhaust gas temp sensor???
Anyway.............I'll try to remember to take a pic in the morning. (I'm exhausted from fighting a router battle..........P.S.A..........if your router is working DO NOT upgrade your firmware.....especially from Dlink.........just keep your old firmware & be happy with mediocre perfromance!)
OK, got a couple pics up. (Forgive me, I left 'em pretty large so you can zoom in & see what I'm talkin' about)
In this first one......if you look at the red circled area you can see (if you zoom in) where the wire from the 'unknown' sensor is. Just a frayed end goin' nowhere.
Then, in this pic, I moved directly in front of the motor so you can see the 'real' O2 sensor (bottom, circled in green) and the other sensor again (right side, circled in red).
Could check and see what the factory specs on your year/model are required to have. Might find out that it was set up for it but some models may not be required to or only if your state requires it would it be installed. Have you looked at a shop manual by chance? Have you consulted any technical references? If its not broken....... I believe the rest goes ..than dont fix it. Words to live by... Good Luck
Ya, "if it ain't broke" works for me.......I just gotta watch out for the state of Caleeeefooorneea! (A la Arnold)
They ain't so polite w/ smog.
I *think* based on how the car runs pretty well that my only concern would probably be failing "visual", so I might go by the folks who normally do my smogs & see if that would warrant trouble or not.
