Xrs

A friend of mine owns an 06' Corolla XRS...and man is it a cool car, but he runs it on premium fuel as that is what the manual recommends...what you guys think if he runs it on regular? Will long term use hurt the car? Is the compression low enough to handle regular without pinging or causing engine damage? Does this engine 2ZZ????(I think that's the code) have a timing chain like the regular Corolla or a belt?

Your friend is right. I personally use Octane 94. The compression is too high (11:5:1) for it to run on regular gas. If it is run on regular gas (especially if taken into lift over 6000 - 8400 rpm), it can cause severe sluggishness, engine damage and detonation. Since it is a 1.8 liter engine, it gives really good gas mileage in city driving ( revs kept below 5000 rpm). As for your other question, XRS is chain driven.

Funny how people dread the "premium" octane word required for a car as if it leaves the owner in shambles and leads to bankruptcy. Realistically, the difference between the cost of Octane 89 and 91 for a full tank of gas is less than $2.00. If I really "worried" about that $2.00 per tank, I would much rather buy one six pack of pop less per week.

Thanks Silver04rollas, to be honest that is what has stopped me from buying an XRS...silly isn't it...but when you sit down and calculate the diffrence it is minimal...even when gas was at $1.15...the diffrence would be like $4.00...funny how people line up when gas goes on sale at $0.77 vs regular costs of $0.84.....people wait in line for 20 minutes to save $1.00, yet stomp the throttle on the way out of the station and burn all theer savings away .

Actually 89 is mid grade in Canada, 87 is regular, 91 is premium and 94 is Ultra (Sunoco and one other gas station have it) I run 89 on my Smallport most of the time, and 91 once a while, don't really notice much of a difference though, but I remember when I first got the car and the guy I bought it from (Cousin of the owner) was running regular and it did feel kinda funny.
