I have a couple of questions on my 1996 1.6L
First of all what is the rev limiter set to from the factory?
Second my rev limiter is hiting a little less than 4 grand.
What could be wrong? This is very annoying when your trying to accelerate fast sometimes.
I just replaced my distributor and still nothing. Same as it was. There is no check engine light either. What could be wrong?
whtn does a 4afe start to hit its vvt???..i know mine has it cause when i go above 40mph in 2nd gearprolly from like 38mph to 50 it changes engine tune and get power....any clue as to what rpm that is??
The 4AFE does not have VVT, it may have something similar to the TVIS system in the 4AGE where the bigger butterflies open at 4000+ to let more air in.
i dont think any USDM 4afe or 7afe has or had tvis. where do you live? maybe you've got engine problems and it feels like it picks up at higher rpms for some reason. tvis is exclusive to the G geads i beleive, except it seems to be around on some older 7afe's from japan, russia, australia, and asia. so unless you've gotten a JDM 4afe or something, you dont have tvis.
additionally, the tvis manifold looks different, you'll see what looks like 2 runners mated together per cylinder, like this
It sounds like your thermostat is bad. When its cold, the computer shouldnt let the engine go faster than 4k. I would check the thermostat because if it is constantly sending a 'cold' signal to the computer, the rev limiter will always be there.

^^WTF...then why does it change like vtec does..i thought someone on here told me a 4afe has VVT..not VVTI but VVT
it hits VTAKKK JOOO! No seriously, theres no VVT on a 4A-FE, theres no TVIS on a 4A-FE, only thing it can do is the normal timing change with the distributor. The thing you're probably feeling is the 4A-FE on its powerband and if its an automatic, its probably the kickdown.

are you talking about the t-stat it self or the sending sensor for the t-stat?
by the way the heat is fine. it blows very hot air in the cabin just to let you know.
just also did the cap and rotor. nothing.
does this car have cam sensor(s)??
i heard they might be in the distributor.
if they are it's been changed.
what the hell could it be?
it running cold is NOT going to hinder the rev limit....
if you are getting a limit of around 4k.... i would check the wires and the COIL.... if the coil is going bad it may not be able to produce the energy quick enough, making it feel like a limiter.....
also.... if the car has ALWAYS been like this then it could potentially (esp. with the new dist.) have the wrong ignitor...... part stores (and especially companies) try to lump a part for as many cars as possible (easiest example are hoses..... they can have slight bends or too hard of bends to accomodate 3 or 4 different vehicles that have 'close' bends), and as such you can end up with wrong parts..... in my car i have personally experienced the wrong ignitor (runs the car just fine) that causes a pre-mature rev-limiter.....
could also be the grade of gas you are using
