What sensors are in your way of installing the filter??

I got a filter and adapter off ebay for something like $10. It was suposed to install on the end of the mass air flow sensor in place of the stock air filter box. This way I wouldn't even have to relocate any of the sensors or the vaccum deal on the stock tubing. I also planned to get a good Quality filter from K&N and put that on instead of the cheap constructed filter from ebay.
The issue I had with the adapter was that the 4 holes were too close to each other keeping it from mounting. Lukily I worked for a metal shop and had it modified. Basically nothing that I purchased was worth it.

Ive heard that a 1989 MR2 (not too sure of the year just know the '87 will not work) has a adapter that will bolt onto the end of the mass air flow sensor and allow a aftermarket filter to be installed. Im told it looks exactly like the one I got from egay, it just WORKS!!

I guess to answer your exact question... None of the sensors need to go if you keep the stock tubing... that is unless you have a different setup of sensors and stuff than I do.
