So I'm driving along North Queen (near Kipling) with my woman today and some old senile bitch turns left in front of me and smokes my car. It completely f*cked up my front fender, bumpers, headlight and hood. Worst of all when I opened the hood I found the metal piece that runs across the car (the one the radiator is connected to ) is bent. Is this a structural piece?
It was totally the other drivers fault and there where witness's to back me up. I don't know what going to happen now because the damages were estimated at $2600. The other drivers insurance will have to pay but will they pay to fix my car or will they just write it off and cut me a cheque for the blue book value of the car? That would mega suck because from what I understand, the blue book value of a hachi is only about $1200. ARGHHHHHHH!!!
The worst part is I just got an alignment done today
yea it should be fixable! dont waste a perfectly fine hachiroku!!

Man, that sucks. Talk with your insurance and tell them you'd really rather have the other company cut a check rather than write it off. See if your insurance can lay down the law on her insurance. Don't know if it'll work, but it couldn't hurt.
One other thing that occurs to me is if you've got significant enough structural damage, you may have a bent frame, which could lead to other issues down the road. Just something to keep in mind.
thats my greatest fear. somthing that happens that is not my fault and everyone believes its more practical to get another car. so the insurance company writes it off for blue book value. truly a nightmare. i seriously hope things work out for you, at all costs keep the 86.
Damn sorry to hear about your loss. Same sorta shit happens to ALL classic cars, the insurance company doesn't see the street value but only the book. My friend's 95 RX-7 (SUPER RARE) got stolen 2 yrs ago and I'm pretty sure that the insurance company only gave him, at most, half of what the car is really worth.
Anyways, I don't want to sound like a leech and no offense, but if the car is a write off and you're gonna part it out, I'm totally willing to help you cover your losses and buy some parts from you, just give me a PM. I live just up Kipling and I know the area you're talking about.
yo man, that really sucks. i just had a small accident with my 86 coupe just past saturday too, just rear bumper is cracked, no biggie.
the insurance company is most likely going to pay you red/blue book value for your car, ranging from 750-1500 depending on year of your 86. but you have options:
- talk to the person that hit you and see if you can get direct conpensation without dealing with insurance and get the car fixed
- write off the car, but show some examples of cars of the same type that sells (car ads) for more than what the blue/red book says to help you negotiate the pay-back
- write off the car, take the money and use a portion of it to buy back the car and fix it yourself. but after the car is fixed, you have to get the car certified and saftied again, since the car would carry a write off or salvage title
- deny the insurance company your car is a write off, but you don't get paid at all
most likely they gonna right it off and give you less than blue book value
somewhere around 800-1100 but then you can do a buy back
probably like 3-400 bucks but will still cost you crazy money to fix
but in the end i'm interested so find out if you can do a buy back cause i'm willing to buy it depending on the condition of the car besides the accident damage
let me know if this is cools with you and your insurance and your personal preference

I was thinking, you can pay us $30 to place ads in the autotrader and have our cars selling at a ridiculous price and then you would have leverage to argue with your insurance company about the worth of the car.
Here's the situation now. My car is at Humberview Motors and a claims person from my insurance company is going to see it today and make a decision to write the car off or not.
A friend of mine got into an accident about a year ago and when I told him what happened to my car he told me to get my car to a body shop before the claims person comes to see it. He said if you leave your car at the Collision Reporting centre or in your driveway your insurance will write it off for sure. If you bring it to a body shop, their going to want to fix your car because then they can collect money from the insurance company.
