Corolla driven in high water

Hi,

My best friend drove her '99 Corolla into a flooded road, and her check engine went on and off few times, then remained off. Right afterwards, the car is starting to make unusual noise. I tried to see where the noise is coming from, and it seemed to me as if it's coming from the manifold.

Any clue as to what could have gone wrong in the car?

Greatly appreciated.

I would say it was 12 in deep. I'll check with her anyhow tonight to confirm it.

I was told the O2 sensors could have gone bad. Yet, if that's indeed true, wouldn't the 'Check Engine' light on?

Another thing; if the water has somehow gotten inside the manifold headers, wouldn't you notice water coming out of the exhaust while cruising?

or the water would boil away from the heat if it was in the exhaust

Could all that cold water on a hot manifold have cracked it?

Sounds like a possible scenario to me.

Thanks guys for your inputs. We will be taking the car to a local mechanic shop tomorrow to look at it.

Possible but not likely, a 99 would have heat sheilds every where.

And as said, even if water did get into the intake it wouldn't be in the engine for more than a few secs.

What sort of noise does it make?

If the water was only a foot deep it's extremely unlikley that it would hydraulic the engine.

12 in deep???? yea I agree with punter only a foot is not even close enough to come to hydrolocking, just check all of the engine bay for anything that looks "abnormal"
