Difference between Timing Belt or Chain on 98

I've had to change a few timing belts on other cars I've owned and at 81,000 miles, I'm worried about my Corolla. Reading through the forum it appears that a chain not a belt is installed on my car. What is the normal lifetime of said chain? When I called my dealer, the person I spoke with said a chain would be like $900 to change especially when any timing belt I've paid to replace was under $300. I think anything that costs that much to replace on a car is asking too much. What happens if the chain breaks; will it ruin my engine?

Timing chains rarely break. You'll replace many more things before it becomes an issue. I wouldn't even think of it unless I had close to 200k miles.

Has anyone here changed a timing chain on their Corolla ?? Cost ??

Chains will generally start making noise when they are worn out, if there's no noise then there's no problem.

(This is from experence with nissans which have always had chains, can't see why toyota ones would be different)

Chains will make noise when they are worn out. Generally they never break ,and if they due its usually do to extreme reving and driver neglegence to find out what that horrid noise coming from the engine is.

P.S. Nissans are a pile of poo-poo (Speaking from expierence)

Maybe the ones you get over there are, but we get some awesome ones.
Skylines, silvias, cimas etc. etc.
