4AGE, 1986 Corolla FXGT - Engine missing?

Gday all,

Can anyone help?

I seem to have a small miss at around 2000 Rpm when accelerating in 3rd of 4th, it will give a small cough before accelerating away.
Doesnt do it all the time, but certainly at moderate throttle settings it tends to happen

anyone have any suggestions?

cheers Mark

Bad plugs maybe.

BTW the title is deceiving.. I thought your whole motor was missing.

um, i didn't.....

in any case.....

pull the plugs and replace if needed.....
check your wires.... 2k rpm in 3rd or 4th will put a load on the motor.... wires tend to jump spark when the engine is more at load.....
get a manual and check the resistance of your coil (just a good idea)
check your ignition timing

cheers all,

sorry about the title, ooops!

appears to be a dodgy lead, and also replaced the Dizzy cover, which inside looked like it hadnt been changed for a long time! didnt have much left on points 3 and 2!

Still, 350,000km, same engine, runs immaculate and still not using any oil, you have to love the 4AGE!!

"missing" and "misfiring" are two different words around here.

350,000km not bad, that's what my 89 GTS has right now. It would be back on the road for winter already but I have a stubborn bolt that stripped and won't come out. I'll be back at it this weekend I hope.

try plug leads...sounds like they mite be arcing with the body when higher voltages are being pushed thru them.

That's true usually nicks and cuts on the wires eventually let the electricity through. I had one of my Civics do this a long time ago, the wire had a cut and it would arc the electricity from the wire to the nearest metal cable (speedo I think, can't remember) and the motor would missfire. It was kinda cool watching the electricity arc though.
