USA 93 Corolla Interchangeability Question

I have a question, I went yesterday to change the ear brakes on my wife’s 93 Corolla DX because they were making some serious noise. The driver’s side went fine, drum came off, brakes were changed with no problems, went to do the passenger side and that’s where the problem occurred.

It’s as if the brake shoes have fused themselves to the drum and it won’t come off, I screwed the bolts into the drum and when it started separating parts and chewed up metal started falling out. The drum isn’t coming off no matter what I do, so I have to swap out the whole axel assembly. My question is this, what year parts are Interchangeable with the 93 Corolla? Does anyone know

If the drum won't come off there is a access hole with a rubber plug at the top of the backside of drum. Use a screw driver to hold the spring loaded adjuster away from the star wheel and turn it with an adjuster to free up the drum. Could also use a propane torch to heat up the drum to free it up.

metal shavings are most likely brake lining, not actual metal shavings. I have a hard time believing you cant get the drum off.

Sometimes there is a ridge on the braking surface of the drum that can make it really, really hard to get off. Try hitting a hammer on the drum (avoid hitting the wheelstuds) then try pulling the drum off again. It will come off, just might take some time and muscle.

yeah like Infinitrium said theres gonna be ridge in the drum, best way to fix this is to let the drum go back onto the wheel studs then from behind theres a slot in the backing plate and you can use a screwdriver to retract the star wheel which will in turn retract the linings away from the drum and you'll be able to get the drum off.

Oh i would check the e-brake it probably siezed causing the brakes to wear out ...

Ive tried turning the release wheel on the back, it just wont turn. When I got the drum partially off yes it WAS twisted metal falling out, along with the retaining spring and caps (that were warped). I have a 16 pound sledgehammer head on a real short handle (like from a small axe) and was beating the drum with that with no luck, I finally found 94 Corolla at the junk yard and pulled the entire axel housing off that to replace mine, the only problem with the one I found is it isnt equipped for ABS wich our 93 has, so Im gonna try one again to get the hub off and use our axel housing (for the ABS) with the internal workings of the other axel housing.

By the way, when I got the hub partially off brake fluid started coming out of it so I know this brake has some serious issues.
