Help!! Seats with side airbags!!

Just purchased a 1998 corolla Le.. Every single option and it has side airbags.. The carpet is stained pretty bad and the passenger seat has pop spilled on it and some orange juice and crayons... Before I bought the car, I figured I could remove all the seats and take the carpet out and pressure wash it and then use my Rugdoctor to do the seats... Well I began to unbolt the seats tonight and noticed that my front seats have side airbags.. Whats gonna happen if I remove my front seats? Anyone do this before? Thanks

Find a service manual, and see what the directions are. If you're too cheap, you could prolly disconnect the battery, wait a few minutes, and go at it unhooking the seat.

I think the recommendation is to put the ignition in “Lock” then disconnect the negative battery and wait 90 seconds before working on the airbag system. The airbag will not deploy unless power is applied to it. As such do not apply any power, take ohm resistance readings or anything else to the wiring going to the airbag.

If you put back the seat, make sure the above procedure with the battery and ignition is repeated if for some reason you have reconnected the battery.

Suggest you go to the on-line Camry manual section at the link below. Find the info on the SRS system with side airbags and see what you can learn. Both car models should have simular systems.

Nothing will happen. My brother worked for Toyota Technical Center and his job was seats. I just asked him. You can disconnect them all day long and nothing should happen. He did it almost daily. Disconnecting the battery is not necessary but can't hurt.
