i bought DEI on ebay and then i used bailing wire for clamps, like giant thick twist ties, i heard the stainless steel zipties were brittle and often broke after a period of time.

Forget heat wrap, get it powdercoated.

I was told that if you use heat wrap and your header is not stainless steel it will rust in a matter of months. Is this true?

...Won't melt your radiator fan. I've been running the OBX headers, unwrapped, for a couple years now. No leaks (yet, there's some concerning spotting but it's probably my fault), no cracks. Won't melt the dizzy, it just makes the guys who get to change my oil hate me and burn themselves.

Its true yes, but a mild steel header will rust no matter what. Only thing is, if its very thin, you can end up burning all the carbon out of the header, turning it really soft. However, my turbo-header is made of 3mm thick mild steel, aint nothing gonna rot that fast

As for powdercoating, it will burn off, only thing that will hold up is ceramic coating, but even that doesnt really block the heat away.

yep, insulation works the best. heatwrap is the same principal in effect in your winter coat! it traps the hot air near the runner and keeps it there. if you've spent ALOT of money on your header then get it ceramic coated inside and out (jethot is good stuff i hear) and then if you need to wrap it, the ceramic coating will block a little heat but not nearly as much as properly applied wrap.

Also another option is to wrap heat sensitive equipment around the manifold, leaving the manifold without the wrap.
