New member of toyota nation!

Hey guys, I just bought, (last night ) a 1990 Corolla GTS. The car has some rust and such on the body, but underbody is mint for its age. Its got a new engine in it, and the only mechanical problems are e-brake is MIA, and will neeed a new one, aswell as there is a leak in the exhaust downpipe. Any idea on how to fix these myself? I don't want to spend money when I don't have to. Any tutorials would be nice.

I bought it for $700 off of CorollaINC http://toyotanation.com/forum/t160956.html

Good deal forsure. My other main problem is that the trunk won't open. Neither the key, or the latch(or both used together) will open it. How can I get this badboy open?

Thanks alot, and I hope to be able to contribute to this forum!

drop the rear seats and reach in and pop the trunk,, the cable problem got pushed out of the way or broken.

looks like a dam good deal you got!

unless there are more problems.. here in California you would have the smog control nightmare, up there you can have just an engine with no BS, is that right?

actually no, we have a 20 year rule which is being phased out
every car has to go through e(missions)-testing and a Safety(Standards Certificiate) test, prior to licensing. Both can be easily forged and MTO doesn't really blink an eye, but for the most part, people want reliable SAFE non-smog blowing cars (OPP will come down on your ass hard)

The trunk lock might need to be replaced, ask CorollaINC about it
downpipe I'd take to a mechanic unless you're confident and you have a way to lift it (same with the ebrake cable)
E brake isn't a big deal to do, just run the line, my Celica's ran along my gas line

yeah there dont seem to be any major mechanical problems, I drove it home that night illegally :O and the car idled nicely at ~1000 rpm. So frigen loud though. Its got a coffee can exhaust(somewhat) that I will probably change out fora stock(cant stand the loud noise)muffler. When in 5th gear though, I did notice that when I put the pedal to the floor, it took several seconds for it to react. I assume that it just needs all fluids replaced, aswell as a good tune up. We shall see though. I also must bleed the breaks. The car shifts nicely though(better than my moms 2003 Accent :P )

Thanks for the input guys, gotta start workin on this beast. any other tips are GREATLY appreciated!
