91 corolla tranny shift issues?

i was driving up to a stoplight and my tranny was still in 5th gear, it was stuck in 5th. i turned off the car and managed to get the car into 1st and then 3rd. but 2,4 5 i wouldn't get the shifter to go into. now i took of my shifter know and boot to investigate, i took of the shift ball cover , put it back on and the car shifts normal, any ideas on what caused this or what i can look for if it happens again?

Lube and/or grease the moving parts of your linkage.

your shift linkage is probabally broken. you need a new one. it can go to those because your pushing the linkage. in my mr2 when the linkage broke it has only able to get to 2,4, and r

lol sorry i didn't read all his post. does it make sense that the trannys on an mr and ff have different shifter linkage mounts. whereas the mr is in the front of the tranny the ff is in the back.
