Rear brake adjustment - 99 Corolla CE

I was studying my Haynes manual in anticipation of replacing my rear brakes. I could not find out how to adjust the rear brakes when done. It did mention that they are self adjusting via the parking brake. How do I take up the slack when done?

Rotate the starwheel until the drum has a considerable drag to it when spun by hand. On some models, you'll have a plugged hole on the face of the drum that you can fit a brake spoon or flathead screwdriver through to adjust the starwheel with the drum on. I just rotate the starwheel until the drum fits snugly and takes some monir effort to turn by hand. But don't go too far!

Is this how the brakes are adjusted on an ongoing basis? If so, I guess I should set the brake every time I park.

You dont need to set the parking brake everytime. The E brake is used for convenience when you only need minor adjustments on the rear brakes. If you want to use your E brake everytime you park it wont hurt anything but it isnt necessary.
