i didnt know they had a 1.5 jdm corolla engine, anyone care to elaborate on this?

also, got a 93 - 97 corolla shell. need to find someone in the carolina area who can install a replacement motor for a good deal or a swap for a good deal, this motor may work, but not sure so any help would be appreciated.

yes, iirc thats the 5afe or 5efe engine (the latter is shared with the tercel) and was a JDM engine. its got less power output than the 4afe and 7afe and theres nothing magical about the engine at all.

you can ALMOST see the identification sticker here, http://i3.ebayimg.com/04/i/05/aa/0f/a3_1.JPG
ask for a closeup on that if you want the engine, you'll also need the correct PCM to make it run right. the US spec 4afe pcm may not jive with the Jap spec engines sensors and the difference in displacement could also come into play.

I didn't know that either, but overseas markets often get much smaller engines than offered here. Heck I just read today about a new VW SUV that will have a 1.4L in Europe! Sheesh my Festiva is "only" a 1.3L! Wouldn't shock me at all to learn Toyota had a 1.5L in the Corolla, or even smaller than that. Here it was just the base 1.6L or the optional upgrade to 1.8L (which now is the only engine here). I had a '94 DX 1.8L 5-speed and it was a fantastic car. I swear it ran even better than the '00 1.8L LE that I have now.
