Clutch for 1993 4A-FE

Hey all how's it going? Just wondering if it's worth putting a new clutch in myself, or if its too much of a annoyance? I dont know exactly where it sits in the car and i was wondering if anyone has put one in to this model? If so was it worth spending your time on, or should i bite the bullet and go to a shop?

i have pulled my tranny and or changed clutch'es somewhere around 10 times its not that bad to do i can do it in about 6hrs providing i have everything,

No matter what you do make sure the flywheel gets resurfaced, sometimes shops will skip this step, also DON'T buy the cheapest clutch you can find unless you like replacing them

The only POS part of doing it is the fact you need to drop the front sub-frame its not a big deal but its not possible to remove the tranny without removing the sub-frame the rear engine mount is the culprit for this, kinda a bad design on toyota's behalf

Also alot of people will tell you you have to completely remove the drive axles, thats not true just unbolt the ball joints from the lower control arm

Minimun tools

- good floor jack, the stock jack isn't good enough

- at least 2 jack stands

-your run of the mill sockets and a breaker bar

-Torque wrench for flywheel bolts

-A way to support the engine on the tranny side while its unbolted from 3 of 4 of its mounts

I would suggest

-Engine hoist (makes getting tranny in and out alot easier)

Ok thanks, another question. What will a stage 1 or 2 clutch do for me that a stock clutch wont? Will it shorted how far i have to push the pedal letting me shift quicker or is it just longevity?

Dunno about AE100 series, but you dont have to drop that in an AE92

I was used to dropping the trans in a rear wheel drive car. But, when My clutch on the Toyota went out, and I saw it looked impossible to do it without lifting the engine, I found somone to do it for $200.00. Plus I am very sick with bad health, it looked like a nightmare to me even though I grew up rebuilding engines and cars. I took mechnics in college too. But the way these trasnverse engines are shoe-horned into the car, it just looked impossible. I printed the instructions out, but seperating the trans from the engine with not 1 inch of room still looks crazy to me. The next clutch might be coming in 2 years, with 310,000 miles on the car and about 100,000 miles are on the latest clutch.
We only have a stock engine, so we get the maximum life out of clutch.

On the 100 series the engine/gearbox can be pulled with out the sub-frame, but not the gearbox alone.

I normaly pull the whole sub-frame anyway as I don't have an engine crane/chain block. Its really not any harder, and it's really easy to get at every thing.
