front stabalizer arm bushings

On the drivers side they are very warn. From the side they look more like a triangle than a square. few questions:
1. would this cause a clanging noise while driving that dissapears while turning.
2. should I get better quality bushings than those from the dealer which are only $26. I'm not planning to be doing any drifting with this car.

If you're not looking for performance, I'm sure a new OEM bushing will last long than the car.

As for the "clanging", it's hard to say, altho, it would make sense. As you're going thru a turn, that's when the anit-roll bar would be working ... but that would mean your bushing is way beyond "worn"; it's be almost non-existent.

You may want to change the steel collar that is inserted in those bushings. They usually rusted badly and the pointed teeth are worn making the collar shorter affecting the control arm geometry.

hemi is right, the collars that holds the bushings do rust, and breaks through, that's why you hear that clanging noise.. i had all my sway bar links replaced on 2 of my ae86's. in fact, i just had one replaced yesterday. just a 15 dollar job from napa (uap) auto parts if you do it yourself, and the napa ones are way beefier... it's a full kit, so comes with everything including collars and bushings. you will need a 10 mm wrench and 12mm socket for the job

way ahead of you man, I called napa and the guy said he couldn't find anything and that I would have to measure the diameter of the bar. shouldn't asking 1987 toyota corolla gt-s be enough?

I think the original question referred to the strut bar that connects the lower control arm to the frame and stabilizes it.
At the front of the rod, are 2 triangular shaped rubber isolators on each side and through them is a steel collar. There is a 22mm
nut that is torqued to 80 ft-lbs on the front.

If the bar is loose it could cause the clanging sound. They should be replaced if they are worn because they affect your wheel alignment.

that would make sense since even after I had it aligned the car still took a little to the left.

I'm talking about the sway bar. in the front. pg 264 in the haynes repair manual.
