AE92 BAD Starter solenoid = battery drain?

I've been reading old threads about the battery being drained while the car sits for a while. I've had my 91 SR5 since new and I've never had to change the alternator or starter, just the radiator and clutch. For some reason the battery drains after a day sitting. There is that tick/spark when I put another battery on. I've unplugged the radio, amps, and fuses for a day and still it happens. I read on a thread that a bad starter solenoid can cause a slow battery drain. A new battery would last a week, and the warranty covers only 1 exchange... bummer. Has anyone had this before? I can rebuild the starter myself but I don't think an auto parts store would sell just the solenoid. Thanks in advance

Are you saying replacing the dead battery with a new one does not allow the engine to turn over? This sounds like a batter cable or starter circuit issue.

You can disconnect the battery wire from the starter and see what happens overnight. Better yet, pick up a low cost amp meter capable of handling 5-10amps and temporarily hook up it up between the positive battery cable and battery. Play around with the fuses, wiring etc. until the reading drops to minimum. There will also be a small drain for the radio memory, clock, and ECU memory. Don’t attempt to start the car or turn on any high amperage devices or the meter will be damaged.

Yes, the solenoid can be replaced separately and is not a difficult job. Check out www.rockauto.com. Or call a few parts stores.

Thanks Toyo, would a a digital OHM meter work? I did see that the solenoid is sold at auto parts stores, for 10 dollars more you can get a reman starter. I'm gonna try what you suggested. Thanks again.

A digital meter is fine. You need a combination amp and voltmeter. Most of these also have an ohm function. When using the meter be sure to select the correct setting. Using the meter to measure amps when set on the volts or ohm reading may damage it. Harbor Freight has then on sale from time to time at under $4.

As to the starter, another case of where the parts cost more then the unit itself.
