idle fluctuation

I just replaced the plugs on my newly purchased Corolla LE. The idle is about 750 RPM most of the time. Sometimes it jumps up to about 850, and on rare occasions to about 1100. I never had a tach in a car before. Is this just due to the fan coming on or should it always be at a constant speed? The car runs like a top and there are no other problems. Having just upgraded from a 1987 Corolla FX with 412,000 miles on it, I feel quite spoiled. There is hardly anything to do to this car. There is no timing belt to replace, the fuel pump is in the gas tank, no distributor, so no timing to set. If I could only figure out how to leave out the gas!

hehe.. I'm sure if you had a tach before you wouldn't worry about it so much. Your old car probably jumped up to 2000rpm at idle without you knowing it.

Don't worry about it to be honest. No idle is ever perfect and depending on conditions, what accessories you are running (fan, AC, heater, blah blah blah) idle will fluctuate.

Enjoy your new car.

My wife had an 86 5 door wagon with 212,000 miles. When we traded for a 01 years ago, she felt spoiled to.

Her 05 was a nice step up from the 01 but that feeling of spoiled went away, hehehe.

Thanks for the info. It's a great car. The woman who bought the 87 Corolla FX is pregnant and will need childcare in the spring. She is interested in having my wife provide childcare so I may see the old vehicle yet again.
