Clutch replacement

I need some info....

I have to replace a clutch on a 97 1.8L Corolla and am trying to figure out how much work is involved. Does the engine have to come out? It almost looks like it doesn't. If the engine does need to come out, that's fine, it's just a lot more time is needed.

I figured some of you guys have already done this. Can I use some of your experience to gauge this work?

From what I have read, a Toyota clutch 'kit' (pressure plate, disc & release bearing) is as good as any aftermarket for a stock setup. Is this correct?

Thanks,
Steve

Hello
If you plan on just a few boltons and your not going to be doing 3 4 thousand rpm cutch drops than a Toyota OEM cluch would be fine.
On the other hand if you are foing to be racing alot or more serious modds then go w/ an upgrade. Stage one (30% increase) would be fine.

It would also be a good idea to get a Haynes manual (or Toyota but thats usually around 50 bucks)to guide you threw the install.
Good tips from here are always good to have but nothing will beat having a manual.

Thanks for the reply. The car will not be used for racing or even be driven too hard ( ) but I want something that will definitely last.

I haven't picked up a Haynes book yet...will do that on the way home from work today.

When I pulled the engine on my Camry, the factory service manual says you have to pull the transaxle with it (or at least implies it). You don't have to. This was the sort of info I wanted to estimate the amount of work and time the job will be.

I will read the procedure in the Haynes tonight, but I still need some details from those that have done this before. I looked through the service manual, and you have to disconnect and uninstall all sorts of things...even the damn radio...to pull the engine!!! I have to believe there's a better way.
