Dealers always rip you off, so always go with the private mechanic.

clutch replacements around here are at least 1k, probably a lil less if you live in a small town, find a good shop, or a TRUSTWORTHY friend who can do it for you for way cheaper

k the damn headgaskets on my car costs 650 just in labour, 10 hours in labour! Scares me to get a quote for a clutch. Clutch replacements are usually really expensive because it ties up a bay in the shop for a fair ammount of time and is alot of work.

I would also call a local tranny shop as they have better rates than dealers but more experience that small general mechanic shops.

The warranty from the tranny shop will be better than your local mechanic as well just in case there is a problem.

When it comes to a clutch, spend a little more for the better piece of mind.

If you are having a dealer do non-warranty work, then by definition, you are getting ripped off.
Go to a tranny shop or independent mechanic specializing in toyotas. You are in Miami right? there must be a thousand of them.

That mechanic must be your friend because here in CT labor alone would be around $400 at a corner shop. For that price go for it if you believe he can do it.

thanks for all the feedback!! Im terrified of tranny shops as i had a horrible experience in Aamco Transmissions with my previous (automatic) car. 2,500 to completely rebuild the transmission and they left the car hunting for idle with a cel on and they didint know what was wrong with it. In the end they never succeeded in fixing the problem with the car (which magically went away over time) Im going to be going over to my friends shop and well rackle the clutch on tuesday. clutch kit is 240 from the dealer. My buddy also found an old strut bar he had in a previous 98 corolla he had which well install on mines. Il post by the end of the week once wer done. Tuesday is my day off hopefully wel have plenty of time... the shop is to my disposal so it should only take a day to complete

i don't know why you would say you "know" you will get it done right.
I have not had experience w/ toyota dealers, but other dealers i have been to and worked for generally pay less than a good garage and have a business philosophy of "replace everything and see if it works". The jeep dealers i have dealt with have either been completely incompetent or criminally fraudulent.
I know a lot of people picture the greasy guy in his backyard garage when you say independent garage, but there are many very good indys out there.
look for large multi bay shops that are clean and busy. you can get references from the good ones. another good sign, esp for tranny shops, is if you see police cars in the shop. also, references from local contractors are good, like delivery companies, large const contractors with lots of vehicles.
just my 2 cents.
