Manuel '93 transmission acting up.

I've had a few problems but I'm not sure if they're related or not, so I'll list them all.

It started a few weeks ago (when the weather started getting cold I might note). I'd be at a stop light sitting in neutral, and I'd go to shift it into 1st, but it wouldn't go. Sometimes I'd slam it really hard and it'd kind of pop into gear (felt like a pop). Other times slamming wouldn't work and I'd start out in second.

More recently I've noticed my car won't accelerate as hard. I could be driving in second, and when I step on the gas harder to accelerate more, it'll simply rev the engine hard and barely give me any pickup. The same goes for third gear. Previously if I gave it too much gas it would do the same thing, but now it's really causing me to accelerate slower.

Also, just moving the stick around between first and second when the car is off cause a squeaking sound. I just noticed it a few weeks ago, but it may have existed earlier.

I'm thinking the cold may have something to do with it, especially since it really got cold here the past week or so (only 30F, but it used to be 50F). I've also heard ideas such as change my transmission fluid, my clutch may be loose, or I need a new one. What do you guys think?

If you're in gear and your engine free-revs without putting any power to the wheels, then you need a new clutch.

dont slam it into first! its getting older and the trannys starting to wear a bit, if it won't go into first put it in 2end quick then try to put it in first again...should go alot easier

Like Doubleedgewomb said if the engine is reving and the car isn't going the clutch is most likely on its way out..

For the squeak lubricate the shifter mechanism under the hood

Changing the tranny fluid always helps personally i recommend Red Line MT-90 although i have heard amsoil works good too
