Is it possible to Turbocharge a 1990 Toyota Corolla GT-S? Or an SR-5??
I wouldn't want to run too much boost, just the usual basic 8 psi.
Is this possible and if so how much would it cost? I know there are no bolt-ons and it would require a custom job. So I'm wondering if I bought a an AE-92 Corolla GT-S or SR5 (depending which i can find in better shape for cheaper) how much would it likely cost to get a shop to install and tune a turbo??
Any and all info and opinions are appreciated!!
Thanks,
Froze

lol well id buy the car first & go from their, most likely if you aint got a ae92 yet there will be issues you will want to address first before you tackle the motor...
YES it is Possible !! Anything is possible if you have the time & money !!!
"Just the usual Basic 8 psi"
As far as cost ! your probly gunna spend more than the car is worth if you have a shop do it all for you !
Ohh & you will most likely find the Sr5 alot cheaper,, but if you plan to turbo you dont want an sr5 you will want to find a GT-S !!

Well i realise that there will be other things that I fix-up or modify first but what I was really wondering was how much Turbocharging the car would cost?
Is $3000 a reasonable expectation? For all of the parts and the installation/tuning? Or am I looking more towards $5000?
The reason I ask is because depending on the cost will depend on when and if I do it. And if its going to cost $5000+ then I wont bother, but if its going to be more reasonable then I will want to do it and then I won't go out right away and buy a new 2.5" performance exhaust because I might need to upgrade it to a 3" exhaust for a Turbo.
So basically I'm just trying to get an idea of the cost and order with which I will upgrade it.
Thanks

lol it shouldnt cost no 3 grand for what your trying to accomplish... & you wont need no 3inch exhaust just because you are going turbo.. 2.5 is plenty also it depends if you wanna try boosting the motor with stock internals, you should be okay with the 7 rib 4age motor thats comes in the GT-S, otherwise the safer choice would be to rebuild with ze pistons/rods...

How much power do you figure I would be able to gain from this? My plan would be to turbo with about 8 psi (so as to keep the engine wear at a minimum) get a 2.5" performance exhaust and all of the other necessary work that would be needed for the turbo. Most places I read say that you can achieve approximately 10 hp for each 1 psi of boost.
So my general goal in all of this would be to have around 220 hp.
Does this seem reasonable?
Also how much would you think it would cost for a shop to do all of this Turbocharging work and parts? Closer to $2000?
Thanks!!!

i cannot give you a quote on how much this will cost you ! it al ldepends on what you do..
to get 220 HP you will need (rufly) 10-12 PSI to get here you will need a standalone ECU or some kind of management to tune with...
im currently building my GT-S for similar numbers.. im going for the 250 mark.. it will be a hell of alot cheaper for me since im building it all myself.. my greatest helpto you is to Start doing your homework, start reading the forums & books ! Maximum Boost by corky bell is a very good book to read !! once you do your homework, you should be able to answer alot of your own questions.. you will figure out what you want to run, & what it will take to get there..

One last question, are there big emission issues with going Turbo? This will be a street car for me, and once the whole project, fix-up and restore is done possibly even a daily driver.
If I turbo the car will it pass all of the necessary tests?
