I need some help with my swap. First can anyone tell me what code this trans is E51 or E58. As you can see from the pics it does have a mechanical speedo cable and it is lsd. I need to try and find axles for this and would like to be able to go to an importer and say " I need driver and pass. side axles from a 4agze levin or trueno" but I need to know for sure what year to ask for. One more question I have is will I be able to use a clutch set-up from a 4age 16v motor. If I use the flywheel, disc, and pressure plate all 200mm this should work, no?
I have a ae92 sedan with a swapped 16v 4age and plan on a turbo in the future, and would really like to make this work. Thanks in advance for any help I have searched but some things are still unclear.
To avoid all the problems, just keep the C52 instead of swapping to the E series, you can still use your current axles and transmission and I think as long as you upgrade your clutch to a heavier duty and don't do burn outs, your transmission will survive.
You haven't posted enough pictures to tell the difference. The easiest way to tell between E51 and E58 is the cover that's bolted onto the end of the tranny. If it's stamped metal, it's an E58(early/late). If it's aluminum, E51(early). Both of these trannys came from the AE92. If it has an electronic speedo sensor, then it's an E58 from the AE101.
How to tell if it has LSD? If you look into the opening where the axle shafts goes in, a hexagonal rod running through the middle will tell you it has LSD? No rod=no LSD.
Now, how do you tell the difference between non-LSD and LSD axles? The LSD axles have longer input shaft splines than non-LSD axles.
What about axles? Non-LSD E51 axles interchange with non-LSD E58 axles and vice versa.
LSD E51 and LSD E58 axles will interchange as well. In summary, you cannot swap LSD and non LSD axles. Important: Know what tranny you own! There are no markings on the case to tell you the difference!
and NO... you can't use a C series clutch/fw/pp setup on an E series trans.... the input shaft of the E series is much larger than that of a C series.... you HAVE to use the 220mm+ stuff

Thanks everyone for the help, but "deeho" I think you have this backwards
"How to tell if it has LSD? If you look into the opening where the axle shafts goes in, a hexagonal rod running through the middle will tell you it has LSD? No rod=no LSD."
The trans has one axle stub in it and when turned one way the opposite side turns in the same direction, I believe if it was an open diff and I turned the stub forward the opposte side would turn in reverse. please correct me if I'm wrong. The side cover is also stamped steel. I hope I can find someone who has the axles as this looks like the hardest part of this swap, anyone done a rwd 4agze conversion lately
Ok, so I have it backwards? Well, I went out to the garage to snap pics of both E58's just to see for myself. The tranny on the left spins in the same direction and the tranny on the right spins in the opposite direction. Go figure!?!
There was a heated discussion on Club4AG about this very topic awhile back. I suggest you go and do a little research if you don't believe me...
well I'm lost, I don't know what to say about this direction thing. Is there any special way to get the axles out or do they just pop out like regular axles? I was going to measure the axle stub so we can conpare but it is being is a pita to get out.
As far as removal goes, they are just supposed to slide out without much force. Keep gently prying, be carefull with the case.
My guess is, you may have an aftermarket LSD installed. Because from what you are describing, you do indeed have an LSD. Post a pic of that input shaft and let's compare.
Here's a pic to compare: the LSD axles are on the bottom
I messed up. when I was out today trying to get the axle stub out I realized when I tapped the axle stub in all the way and spun it forward that the passenger side does indeed spin in the opposite direction, so I don't think this is a lsd trans.
Apart from that I tried a piece of wood on the housing of the trans with two pry bars on either side with no luck. Then I found a long nail and put it through the passenger side so I could try to knock out the axle that way. It moved about 1/2" with a 10lbs sledge hammer, but will not come out any further. Going to try again sunday with a harder piece of steel but something is def. wrong thats probably why it was still in there from the importer, they could not get it out.
So deeoh I greatly appreciate all your help and pictures (and also having these spare parts lying around I'm jealous) cause now I know exactly what I am looking for, but I'm not going to use this transmission in my car. I'll look for a real oem lsd e-58 in the future. Do you have any pictures car(s)?
