hi. I've got a 96 Corolla that sounds like its got a slipping belt. The noise is most audible from the right side of the car and goes away when the A/t is put in Neutral. Any ideas on the problem? I'm gonna check it out more, but if anyone has an opinion of what it could be, let me know. Thanks.

Let the car cool to ambient (couple hours)

Take the belts off and start it. See if the noise is still audible. If you can still hear the noise, its tranny or engine. If you cant then its belts or pulley bearings.

just dont' run it very long with no belts. 1 min tops.

Also, If it goes away w/ the belts off just try putting one on back at a time till you hear it again.

does it do it more when you first start the car and then mostly stop when its warmed up?

Actually, it seems to do it more when the car is in drive and is irrespective of how long the car is driven. If the car is put into Neutral, the sound stops.

Any ideas?

Doesn't this car have just one serpentine belt?

I have no idea how many belts it has. I would think that the AC would be a second belt, it is on most cars. All I was trying to give was some troubleshooting tips.

I wasn't even talking to you rezzle, see I quoted someone else.

Anyway as far as I know most cars produced from the 90's up have just one serpentine belt

Maybe I'm wrong, mine certainly does.

I belive the 96 rolla ether came w/ a 4afe or a 7afe.
If so it should have 2 to 3 belts.
Depends on if it has A/c or not.

Well my car was having the same problem with squealing, and i did some research and decided i had a bad passenger side lower ball joint. Got that replaced and the sound has disappeared.
