No Ignition Coil=====> Car STARTS?!?!?

I unhooked my ignition coil then spark plugs, left my car and then came back put the plugs in and forgetting that I unhooked my coil I managed to turn the car on. It made a growling noise, then I turned off the car wondering what the heck just happened and remembered that I didn't install my other coil on (courtesy of EK-9) How the heck can the car start without anything igniting it? I dun get it.

If you just unplugged the centre high tension lead and left it
close to the coil. Then the spark just jumped the gap.
