I need to know if these transmissions are compatable, or will I need to put my old tranny on the new motor? If they are compatable what will have to be switched from one tranny to the other one. If you can help with this in any way it will be appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

I have a 95 corolla with the 7afe. the tranny numbers are as follows 1NXAE09B4 SZ287456. The motor in my car spun a rod bearing. I found a good deal on a motor/tranny combo that I want to put back into the car. The motor and tranny that I bought to go back in the car are a 7afe with the tranny numbers 1Y1SK5267 VZ433668.
The new motor and tranny are "new" they only have 4 miles on them. The car the motor and transmission came out of was damaged upon delivery to the dealership several years ago. The car was totalled so the dealer donated the car to a local high school. The car sat undisturbed at the school until recently when the autoshop class used it for pactice, and pulled the motor and transmisison.
I hope this clears things up a little. If the "new" tranny is different from what I currently have is there any chance of running it? The only reason I wanted to run it instead of the current one is that it is new, and doesn't have 100k miles on it. If I can't run it then I will just leave the current tranny in and replace only the motor.
Well it looks like the tranny I got with the new motor won't work. Evidently its an A131L and not a A245E. Guess I'll just drop in the motor and not worry about the transmission.
One problem they never used the 3spd (A131L) with a 7afe, it was only used on the 4afe...
the 7afe uses the 4 speed (A245E) you may not have a 7afe!
the 1.8 7afe liter has a aluminum stiffener that bolts to the bottom of the engine and to the transmission leaving a small black oil pan at the very bottom of the engine while the 1.6 4afe has an all steel oil pan
right across the bottom off the engine..
also may wanna check the source look on the front right of the engine block, (right up against the tranny) about halfway down theres a flatspot that will give ya the real block code (7a / 4a)

Got the old motor and transmission out today. I will just bolt up the old transmission to the new 7afe motor. Yes I am sure its a 7afe. Still not sure about the new transmission though. I have found out though that the newer transmission came out of a 98 corolla so that might be the difference.
It was amazing how much of the front and underside of the car I had to take apart just to pull the motor. I think that while I'm in there I will go ahead and replace the struts and maybe also the springs. Anything else you guys can thing of that I need to replace/inspect while I have it down this far?
