Ok, well I guess I should say the care barely runs. I tuned it up today, took the dizzy out to try to replace the seals but coudlnt punch the pin out on the shaft so only replaced two o rings. Made alignment marks like a guy at the shop told me and put it back together with new cap and rotor. Fire it up and it ran great and revved it up fine too. Well I start it back up to leave the shop and it starts to stall at idle. I let it run for a few seconds then it dies again. So we start it up, and it revs fine in neutral, maybe sputter a lil bit. Well I drove it around the block and by the middle of the drive full throttle felt like 1/4 throttle. Really sputtered bad and as soon as youd come to a stop itd die. So I'm pretty sure that igntion timing is off. I dont think the cap could be on wrong as if the wires werent on the right cylinders I doubt itd run at all. Hopefully I didnt damage anything. Also, I noticed a ground from the harness going into the dizzy that is not attached. Never noticed it before and not sure where itd go to. So I'm hoping to try to sort this out tomorrow. The shop I did that at was closed when I got done so I left it there and got a ride home.
I've tried searching for firing order and I guess its 1 3 4 2? So maybe thats my problem? Just didnt think the car would run at all like that. If that's the case, think my drive around the block did any internal damage?
I am just guessing but I would say you have 2 wires in the correct places and 2 in the wrong places. It would still run but it would act exactly as you are telling us. Good luck and recheck your plug wires. The timing should be checked with a timing light however the main problem on your car appears to be the wires are in the incorrect places.
90 GP, thanks for that bit of info. I'll look for that, and I guess I do have the wires in the right order on the valve cover. I looked online on autozone's page and it is 1-4 front to back. However, I may have the positioning on the dizzy arong. The numbers were placed on the cap too and its a Yota cap, so maybe I have to turn it. Also, anyone have any clue as to where the ground I mentioned goes? I'll see if I can check out a friend's engine bay if hes in town or else I'll take a pic and post it online
Ok, so ya, the wires were on the cap wrong. They're labeled, but its hard to tell if the #s were indicating to the right or left of where they were. I'm sure other people would have known better but guess thats my dyslexia kicking in. So I switched tme around twice, cause I didnt realize 1 isnt at 10 o clock but actually like 8. So it ran better, managed to idle for several minutes, but still died. But, it was able to run without sputtering like before. My friend tried to turn the dizzy some and it stabilized a bit more, but when it idles the miss still occurs, but its not constant. It just happens intermitently with no pattern. I still havent figured out where I can put taht ground from the dizzy, but I don't think it'd have such an impact. The vacuum lines going by the dizzy are connected as well.
I decided to drive the car to my friend's place, since his dad is pretty mechanically savvy and will look at this week since I have no time during the week to toy with things with my work schedule. It managed to make the 30 min. drive with no issues other than occasionally stalling when I'd have to stop. I didnt get on it really hard, as it still felt not as strong as it should be, plus I thought I heard some pinging in 5th gear, but going easier on the throttle it dissapared. Anyway, hopefully my friend and his dad can figure out what's going on. Anyone else have any thoughts? Anyone know whats involved with setting igntion timing? I really need to buy a manual. lol. Hope to do so soon
Just an update. My friend's dad determined my distrubotor timing was indeed off by a tooth. He says it runs fine now. Gonna replace the valve cover gaskets next and change the 02 sensor when I go to pick it up. Would have done so today but the snow here kind of put a damper on things
