Im troubleshooting a problem that just came up with my 88 4af. I had a coolant leak (it was the hose between thermostat and water pump pipe) which I just fixed, but while I was determining where the leak was coming from I took my carb off to get a better look around and figured id replace the gaskets under it, clean it up and replace a few brittle vacuum hoses.
Well I get everything back together and now the car dies when the idle drops down. It seems to only do it when it gets warmed up. I drove it around a bit and it runs good it just dies really quick when theres no gas, so im thinking i must have accidentally tweaked/adjusted something when I had the carb off and was scraping the gasket off it, or when I was wiping the dirt and built up stuff out of the inside. Could I have messed something up by pushing open the first butterfly valve on the top of the carb?
Im going through the troubleshooting steps on the Autozone website (here) and I dont know how to check things like the carb float, choke pulloff, choke thermostat or the idle air control valve. I can locate them, theres just no description of how to check them to make sure they are working properly.
What I have done is checked all vacuum leaks, tried adjusting the idle speed screw and didnt notice a change in anything, and right now I have my fuel pump off and am testing that. Which brings me to my fuel pump question; if you block the outlet only, should there be play in the lever? Mine has play and lets out a wheezing sound. Also when I block the two vent holes on the bottom, theres a little play in the lever.
Sorry about the length, thanks in advance for any help.
Unfortunately I did take some pics with my camera phone and they are worthless.
The first time i fired the car up it died shortly after, but it was dark and I stopped until the next day. The next day I opened the hood and noticed i did miss a vacuum hose altogether, however since then I have quadruple checked my vacuum hoses with the diagram under my hood. If you say it sounds like a vacuum issue im gonna go take a look at everything again.
Did you try to spray some carb cleaner around the base gasket to see if idle speed increases? If so you have a vacuum leak which accounts for the stalling. Did you try putting back on the old gasket to see how it runs? If it was running well prior to the work I can't imagine any adjustments being out of whack at this stage causing the problem. There is a clear plastic sight glass on side of carb to view the level in the float bowl so you can verify if float level is correct. I remember numerous vacuum hoses on the 87 I had. I would be very suspect of them.

Thanks for the reply. The old gaskets are in peices, so i cant try them out. I will check the float level now.
my advise is, don't mess with the float... if you have, I can't help you. There is a very long procedure for that, and it comes printed on sheets of papr include din rebuild kits..
When I had the carb off I didnt mess with anything, all I did was scrape the gasket off which I had to turn it upside down to do, and I cleaned the top and inside where the butterfly valve is.
Update: I just took the airfilter housing off to get a better look at the float. I then noticed that the "S" vacuum hose going to the EBCV was off! Now I cant imagine I have overlooked this the last few days, nor that I could have just accidentally taken it off becuase its a pretty snug fit. Anyway I wont know if this will fix my problem until I start the car, which brings me to my other questions; my fuel pump is off and im trying to determine whether its bad or not.
On step 1, theres no play at all. (which doesnt make sense)
On step 2, it locks. (which is good)
On step 3, when I block the outlet, theres no locking and a wheezing sound, which I guess is perssure going out the return.
Lastly, theres is a little bit of play when I cover the vent holes on the bottom and then try to push the lever. So I guess the oil seals are bad?
you can help me! A while back reuilt my carb and found a part I left off the car.. It's a pin..
snapshots I took opf the pin.. Its about the size of a AAA battery: http://virtualairforce.byethost11.co...ota2/ulthm.htm
one symptom I had after the rebuild and finding the pin. The ligths no longer bump the idle up as they should.
I wonder if it has soemthing ot do with the idle up. I cannot figure out where this pin goes. I rebuilt the carb 1 years ago. After I put it back on the pin was left ont he table.
Since you just took yours off, maybe you know. No one else can figure out wher eit oges.

Thanx..
It doesnt look familiar to me, but theres a couple thiings that look like it on here.
Update: I put the vacuum line and fuel pump back on and the car seems to idle now. However the lowest i can get it to idle is about 900rpm's. Any lower and it starts to stumble. Could this be an issue with the fuel pump?

um,, no,,, it goes on the outside somewhere...
not on the inside... I went by a cheklist for all the inside parts in the rebuild, plus 50 years previous knowledge. I used the parts list in reassembly, plus it would not be running nice now if I had left parts out of the inside..

thanx anyways..
It definetely doesn look like anyting on the outside, it must have been mixed up with your parts somehow.
As for my idle....I know how to set it and its supposed to be at 650 for a manual trans. Im fine with it being at 900, but it just didnt seem right that it would get rough/stumbly any lower than that.
