Help Brakes snow

Hello, We got little bit of our first snow today and I something wired happened. I was breaking and all the sudden a griding noise came up and i could not hit the brake. the pedal felt as if it was blocked. The after some time the car stoped. I realize that only happens if I hit the brakes slowly. Anyone had experinced the same? I have a corolla 2005 only 18.000milles
Thanks a lot

They have their down side... cars stop faster in SNOW without ABS, than cars with ABS. though you do maintain some control.
