not an uncommon issue at all i bet your going through about a litre every 1000Km?? maybe a little less... any ways i wont get into it to deeply, id put my money on the oil control rings being worn/stuck in there grooves... basically your looking at a short block engine rebuild... the good news is even though its burning, it will last a good long time, LONG AS you keep the oil no more than 1/2 a litre (or half the fill portion on the dipstick) down as lower can cause momentary loss of oil pressure causing bearing damage....

I have heard that "Sea foam" will help unstick your oil rings. I have never used it myself but a few guys on the Tercel page swear by it. I think Advance auto Parts sells it.

Modification: Changing something to what you thought it should have been from the start!
well i just checked my oil today and it was a quater eaten already and i had just changed my oil like a month ago but i guess its not that bad even know it shouldent be eating any of it....thanks again ppl i will check up on that "sea foam".
another problem i have is when ever i start my car on high idol it shakes really bad..but once it gets to operating temp. it still does it but not as bad. i can only notice it when i am sitting still.
Sea foam will remove some carbon and sludge, but will not remove stubborn deposits. If you have a plugged injector, you engine will run very rough with a 4 cyl engine. I also own a 95 Corolla DX and recently replaced the piston rings and valve seals to reduce oil consumption. It was a lot of labor, but was well worth it. I have driven about 1,000 miles since the rebuild and it appears that the problem has been solved. The engine does not burn oil any more, runs smoother, and compression went up slightly. How bad is your oil consumption and how many miles are on the engine? Have you done a compression check?
Continue to check and add oil as needed. The engine will continue to run, but may develop carbon build-up if there is excess blow-by from worn piston rings. The problem will worsen over time if not fixed. I also had the same engine vibration when cold. It was partially fixed when I cleaned out the intake system and EGR valve, but still exists. I am still trying to diagnose the problem and think its a faulty EGR modulator.
I was burning about a qt every 700 miles. So i did rings and valve seals. I think the valve seals were OK but since it was apart that far I figured I might as well. The rings were all gummed up which I'm was the cause. Now I'm over 700 miles since the work and no oil gone.
As the last post says, lotta labor, but not really that hard if your mechanically inclined. If you're not I wouldn't attempt it. For me it was well worth it.
You might try a good engine flush with your next oil change, though some here will argue against that notion. Depending on whats causing the prob, an engine flush might fix it.
