Anyone Have a Wierd Exhaust/muffler Noise?

It's hard to explain i hope someone has had a simalar thing happen to them.
anyways basicly what i have going on is a noise that i cant imagine coming from anywhere other than the muffler. my friend said that it maybe the muffler core it just kid of sounds like metal on metal vibration i check for loose bolts every where on the exhaust from the header the the muffler and everything is tight have had everything inspected my mechanics (but not a muffler shop) i dont want to take it to a muffler shop (hence posting this) anyways the noise is someone intermittant but sometime it stays around and is really annoying usually during low rpms. sometime if i hear the noise and i step on it(the gas) the noise goes away.
the noise is so weird that when i had the mechanic drive it to check for the noise he didn't hear it! please has anyone had any metal on metal noises coming from what seems like the exhaust? it's weird because it almost sounds like it comes from the front sometimes... when your in the car.. but my friends said he definately heard it from the back side of me. any help would be great this is my first post so ill leave my email tlong831@msn.com

if you can hear it tick when you press on the gas at low rpm but once your in higher rpm's the noise goes away, or when your idled theres no noise then its probably your catalytic converter heat shield, just take the shield off its covering your catalytic converter

I have a '90 Corolla that has had a similar noise for years. I only hear it at idle, and not all the time. It's a low knocking noise, not like thin metal clanging together. To me it sounds like a heavy metal piece knocking against the frame, but unfortunately I've never been able to isolate it. It does it so infrequently that I have just gotten used to it and don't really even notice it anymore. Next time it does it I'll see it I can locate it.

no need to remove the catalytic converter is just a shield surrounded it on top

Cool

a loose baffle plate in a muffler or other exhaust part wil make that sound! only thing you can do is find out if it the muffler or the convertor and replace it... it prolly in the muffler.... get close to it with it running and listen for the loose baffle plate in the muffler..

problem idnetified... and solved..

so you dont think it could be the heat shield on the Catalytic converter? is the original shield supposed to have bolts into it? mine does not.

also... 1 bolt is missing from my exhaust manifold. and it appears to have a hairline crack about 4 inches long maybe more i cant see... im going to post some pics tonight.

bolts

so the catalytic converter heat shield is supposed to have bolts in it? 94 corolla

and

i dont think getting close to the muffler and listening would work because it doesn't make any irregular noise while idleing. it only does it during acceleration. and is not very consistant about when it does it. i will post pics of my entire exhaust soon it started raining today it should clear up tommorow.

but is that heat shield supposed to have bolts in it? and do you agree that it may be the noise? i am doubtful that it is the shield... i wish it was. but it's not that big of a problem really i just hope it doesn't get worse. didn't really do it much today.
