Bad right front inner bearing on a 96 DX...

My mother has a 96 DX corolla. It has 55K miles and has never had any problems. I drove it a couple of days ago and noticed a vibration when accellerating hard in first or second gear. I thought it might be a bad inner CV joint. I called the local toyota dealer, and mentioned the problem, they said it could be the CV.. and I should bring it by for them to check..

It just so happens, my mother took the car by the same dealer. The diagnostic receipt indicated the fulid was dirty, contaminated (I did see a little something on the end of the dipstick).. and the vib was internal to the trans. And they told her it needs a new trans 2800bucks.

I took it to a local trans shop I used to work at about 20years ago and checked the inner CV joint on the passenger side,, it (or the bearing is toast). Dropped the transmission pan,, and the inside of the trans looked fine.

So,, the question is,, does the bearing require the trans removal to replace? Is it separate from the CV? and what is normally the cost involved in the replacement of the bearing?

Any body know a good chilton or repair manual (other than the factory one) that provides good info on this repair??

thanks

Regarding the maunual you should be able to get a Hayne's manual for that car at your local auto parts store.

oh bering replacements are a bitch....if the outter bearing(s) are bad (the ones by the brake disk and such) if u dont have a press to get the hub back in after u have hammered it out you havta take the whole assembly to a shop.....its cheaper just to buy a whole knuckle with bearing and hub from a junk yard (ive done the outter ones on my celica and camry)

well,, i replaced the whole half shaft

Local toyota dealer wanted 135 for a replacement and 140 to install. Local auto parts wanted 66bucks for a lifetime replacement.

The boot on the inner CV was perfect. But,, there were signs that grease from the inside was being slung out. It was on the steering rack and firewall.

I pulled the old halfshaft apart and the tripod (inner CV that allows angular and axil movment) was rusted and worn and had minimal grease. But,, the bushing inside the trans also appeared worn.

I went to the toyota service area and spoke with a mechanic. He said that the CV goes bad first and then after the grease slings out,, the transbushing goes bad because of the vibration.

But,, that does not really explain much. If the CV had been balanced better in the first place, it would not have caused the bushing wear that caused the grease to get slung out. The mechanic also said that the bushing can't be replaced bc you cant get the part (even though its directly inside the trans right on the other side of the passenger side seal). Sounds like a design flaw on the trans really. Those parts are normally bearings not bushings.

Well, since its only had 20K miles in the last 4 years, I just put in the replacement half shaft and that fixed the vibration. But,, the question becomes, will it sling out the grease again bc the bushing has too much clearance? I cleaned off the motor and firewall area good and painted it with white paint so I can tell when the grease shows up again. Hopefully it will at least be another 50K miles.

Corolla owners What ever you do,, check the firewall on a regular basis for grease. If you see it,, you might be able to just replace the halfshaft before damage occures in the trans,, but they are probably very closely related with a cause and effect...
