Struts should their be any play?

I put new struts on my 2002 corolla. I also put new half shafts. I am getting a humming noise, really bad at about 45 mph. I was going to put the old half shafts back on but when I took off the tires I shook the rotor and the strut assembly moved maybe a quarter inch play. is this normal? and could this cause the humming noise. If anyone has any info or maybe another solution please let me know

Thanks
Bill

Movement in the strut is not normal. Dont think that has anything to do with your noise tho. I'll have to go with the newbie and say wheel bearing.
