Can anyone tell me how to change the wheel bearings in my 2002 Toyota Corolla S. I would appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks
Bill

Bill,
From the sounds of it, you're just guessing that its the wheel bearings since I read your last posts about ur strut and axle install.. Double check everything that you did.. Did you run into any problems with the axle installation? A wheel bearing can go bad but its not too likely if you never had any problems before the installation with the humming noise.

I used aftermarket shafts and they were not exactly the same as the oem. One side the cotter pin on the shaft nut is right next to the axel nut . the other side is about a 1/4 inch from the axel nut. the only difference the parts store wanted to know is if it was ABS or not.
Toyota could not tell me and I am only going bythe fact that no ABS light comes on when you start the car(no dummy light). how tight shold the axel nut be(torque)

Thanks

Was there any resistance when you put the axle on? Did you make sure that the splines lined up? Does the humming get louder as the car goes faster? Could be your wheel bearing.. If it is, you need a press to get the old bearing out and the new one in..

wheel bearing

the shafts went on very easily no resistance just on tap from my rubber mallet and they were snug. it does get louder with speed and really makes noise on decelleration. at one point when turning the noise will stop, but just for that perfect point in turning.

Almost 100% its your wheel bearing.. If the noise goes away when you turn the wheel then thats it... Take the hub off and have a machine shop press the new bearing in.. New bearings are really cheap.. Should fix your problem.. Hope this helps
