My 1998 corolla's CEL has been on for quite some time, and it was ruled out that I need a new Charcoal Canister, the car has 116K miles on it and overall it runs great, some normal wear and tear for a car of it's age.
This is an expensive part that I probably will replace over the summer, but I was curious as towards what it does? My gas mileage has been fluxuating a lot lately. One tank I will average 32-33 MPG the next I will average 26.
I would tend to think that a bad charcoal canister will cause your MPG to fluctuate, which is exactly what you're seeing. Also, it's bad for your emissions system and bad for the environment, so I would get that replaced ASAP.
P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction
now you said you had this checked out and it was the canister?right?
also if you need a part hit the yards first. alot cheaper than new.
Yes, this has been verrified. Toyota inspected it and found it wasnt working efficeiently
jeez, I almost feel embarised to call a parts yard again looking for this part. Its impossible to find a 98+ corolla in a junkyard, let alone such a strange ass part.

well think of it this was, if they have the car, then your chance of the part still being on the car is very high because it is so strange

^charcoal can is good for you, the charcoal inside the can (explains everything doesn't it) absorbs the vapour from the gasoline in the fuel tank. At the right times the engine will 'suck' the gasoline in vapour form from the charcoal, and burn it.
You pay for your gas afterall, might as well get the most from your buck. It is one emission component that will not 'hold your engine back' if looking from a performance standpoint....like EGR for example.
If your charcoal can is faulty, and your gas cap's pressure relief valve happens to be shot, pressure buildup in the tank has nowhere to go, when that happens: boom.
I have a Corolla CE 2005 with 42,000 Kilometers on it, they had to replaced my Charcoal Canister about a week ago. The engine light when on. I did not pay anything, it is still under warranty, below 60,000 Kilometers, what could have gone wrong? I also placed a Stant locking gas cap, #10509, after that. Anything could happen when you live in an apartment. I when to the internet at Wilson Motors, in Washington State and check out how much it cost, it is about $272.00 USD, just the Charcoal Canister, no labor yet. I cannot find a price in parts in CDN dollar. What really could have gone wrong with only 42,000 Kilometers, anybody?
