What struts to buy?!?!?!?!?!

My AE101 needs struts. What do you guys use or recommend?

I know NOT to buy GR-2's ever again and I'm not too keen on paying $202/strut from the dealer.

John

unless you want stock replacements, gr2s are really the only way to go... and you don't have to go to a dealer, a strut costs like 75 bucks @ autozone, and another 75 to install @ any mechanic shop... so ur looking at like ~300 bucks total, dealer is not worth the price they charge for equally quality work... it only costs so much because ur getting "certified" parts and labor...

You said they dont last... how so? Did they break? You could get some koni struts and GC coilovers...... if you want to spend the money.

GR-2s do suck. I'll also never buy them again. They are virtually the identical to stock. I'd say try Tokico HPs (reasonably priced like GR-2s) or get Konis (expensive but awesome).

Of course this requires you have factory struts on the car, because KONI doesn't MAKE struts, just strut inserts. (This means cutting the old struts apart and putting the inserts in.) And, while there's one brand of struts that the front KONI inserts will fit into, nothing but the stock rears will accomodate the inserts.

Psst, want to buy a pair of unused KONI Yellow rear inserts? (Can't find factory bloody struts, even at the wreckers' yards.)

Will struts & mounts from a 92(AE92?) corolla fit a 97(AE101)?

Friend of mine has offered me his struts & mounts and springs for $300. The things are practiclaly mine because he went to coilovers, expensive ass coilovers.

The mounts are toyota brand, springs are some 2.2" lowering that arent going to be used in my car, and the struts are of another brand name. All of it was over $1000 and only has about 5K on them.

Will they fit my car? He says yes not a problem that all the struts & mounts are the same from 88-97

Thanx guys

From what I've seen on coilover applications for the AE101, the listing for "88-97 Corolla" seems to be common with respect to compatibility, spring rates, etc. As mentioned in another thread, it may be that the AE92 has skinnier struts and springs such that crosspollinating struts/mounts/springs wouldn't work...but if you're transplanting the entire assembly, everything should work out OK. I think the 101s are only a couple hundred pounds heavier than the 92s anyway, if that.

Yeah he bought coil overs, this is why I he offered me this stuff. But the springs are 2.2 inch drops, and that's too low for my taste, 1 inch maybe.

But i called it off anyways, I just want bolt up, too busy to be shagging around with stuff.

I think Im just gonna buy struts locally with lifetime warranty

thanx guys
