Hi, I have some engine problems. When I first start my car (94 1.6L) in the morning, or after it has been off for a few hours, the engine will stumble on and off eratically every 2 seconds. Even after I warm up my car for 10+ minutes it still happens. I have a Haynes manual and it says the cause of this may be a clogged fuel filter(havent replaced in 1.5 yrs) or fouled spark plugs(replaced a year ago). The car also stumbles on acceleration as well as every gear I put it in. Before I pay alot of money on a diagnostic check, could someone give me advice on what to replace. Thanks, Matt.
a filter and plugs that new shouldn't be problematic, you say stumbles, is it more of a knock(loud metalic ping like hitting two marbles) or a misfire (missing sparks sorta short random flat hollow sounds)
does it do it at operating temp like after half an hour?
you didn't mention the cap and rotor if there more then 75,000kms or about 45,000miles there probably due to be changed

Well the engine will sound fine, but every two seconds it will suddenly sound like the engine turns off and then back on. When it sounds like the engine turns off, the car doesnt vibrate much, just as if the car actually was off. Also, this only happens during the first twenty minutes that the engine is on. I would warm the car up for 10 mins and once it reaches operating temps, it will stumble for another 10 minutes upon driving.
Sounds more like there's a jump of electricity either on the cap or the wires, check your cap to see if it's cracked or if it's loose, check the wires for cuts.
I recently had a similar problem with mine, it's a '90 DX, and it was idling too rough and was jumpy in gear. I ended up needing pretty much a basic tune up: new PCV valve, new fuel filter, new plugs, new distributor cap and rotor and new ignition cables. So it could be any or all of those things or something else, so check everything and have a car savvy friend help you figure out what needs replacing and what is just fine.

Alright everyone, thanks. Joker did you get a tuneup from a mechanic? If so how much did you pay. If you did it yourself, how much did you pay for the parts? Thanks, Matt.

Usually when the car needs some kind of work, I try to do whatever I can do myself and then for the rest, we have a mechanic who is a friend of the family who owns a shop and he does most of the work himself so he doesn't charge nearly as much as a national chain or dealership would for labor. He does excellent work and they all have ASE certification. The total cost of all parts and labor was about $300, not too bad for a tune-up since most places tend to charge a great deal for that, so shop around and definitely ask family and friends if they know of a good mechanic that they recommend.
I just noticed that you live in MD. How close to Northern VA do you live because my mechanic is in Herndon, VA right off of route 28 and if you want, I can give you his number and address and you can give him a ring.
