Timing is 10 btdc. and the torque is weird. I'll check my manual and get back to you tomorrow. But I think it's 22 ft lbs. then (going in the right order) turn 90 and one more time around for anothe 90 for a total of 180.

Why they don't just give a torque setting I don't know?

IIRC Your torque specs are wrong.
The bolts arent stretch bolts. On the older head it was something along the lines of 20-40-60NM. I'll double check from autodata on monday when I hit the garage.

Mine is a 93. was there a change from 92-93?

My factory service manual for my 93 Geo Prizm with the 1.6 Toyota DOHC says 22 ft lbs or 29 Nm and then re-tighten 90 degrees and then another pass at 90 degrees.

Proper torque pattern is as follows

8 6 1 3 9

10 4 2 5 7

My Haynes manual says the same thing. It's range is year 1993-2000 So there may be a difference.

Hope this helps

92-97 would be the same. Like I said, I'll check it tomorrow.

Do remember that the 4A-FE has a different torque setting than the 4A-GE. 4A-GE uses stretching bolts, 4A-FE doesnt.

If its a 4A-FE theres installation marks on the inner side of the camgears.
Then you just rotate it so that the camgear hole points to the marking point.

You really should have a manual for this job. When you removed the intake cam did you secure the 2 gears together with a 6mm bolt?

And then for instalation there are a few different marks and I'm not sure how to explain it without the diagram Or typing a long explanation which at the moment I don't have time for. There are both installation marks as well as timing marks. Torque for the cams are 115 in lbs(that's inch not foot) or 13 Nm

I think if you do a search on the forum here there are some manuals within the site that will tell you a lot of info.

If I had more time I would type more. Sorry,
Good luck

Doing this without a manual is kinda like wiping your ass with sand paper. You can do it, but theres lot of things that can go wrong.

That can be done with the cams out, if he didnt do it. So its not going to be the end of the world.
