2001 Corolla Catalytic Converter
I apologize if this topic has been covered before, but I could not find what I consider to be a close match doing a forum search.
My wife has a 2001 Corolla with 104,000 miles. The "Check Engine Light" kept going on and off on it's own. Last month, I went to have the state inspection done (Massachusetts) at the dealer. The dealer advised me that it had failed due to a bad catalytic converter and that it would cost $1200.00 to replace.
I took it to a local exahust place that I've had good luck with over the years and they agreed that the converter needed to be replaced, which they did for $265.00 (aftermarket converter). They also reset the computer.
Knowing that you have to drive cars some distance to get the OBD II to register after being reset, I waited until the car had another 600 or so miles on it before I took it back for re-inspection.
I brought the car in this morning and the dealer advised me that they could not get a reading from the OBD II. They also advised me that it was because I had replaced the Toyota converter with an aftermarket one instead of an OEM. They told me that aftermarket converters will not work on Toyotas'.
I asked him why they sell aftermarket converters then and was told "so people like you will waste their money."
I'm pretty sure it's not just me, but does anyone have any answers they might be willing to share?
Thanks in Advance,
Mike
