4AGE with 3 speed auto trans... will it work?

So i have a 97 corolla and i think the engine is going to need some major work soon, i foud a great deal on a silvertop 4AGE motor with everythignminus a 5speed trans, i found it local with about 40k miles for $500 out of a wreck (the car was hit in the rear so the motor is fine). the guy says the tran is messed up, so i wanted to know if i could bolt up my 3speed auto if it wil work or not

Theres lots of work to get that Silvertop in there. Gotta get some custom stuff made up. Theres diferent pinouts on the ECU for the C56 (5 speed, JDM) and the 4 speed auto. I'm not sure what the pinouts are like on the USDM 3 speed. I have a manual AND 4 speed auto silvertop computer sitting around.

It'll work, yes, if you have either the auto silvertop ECU or some way to manually control solenoids.

However...

You may not see the kind of improvement you're hoping for. Consider the power band of the 4AFE versus a high-revving peaky-power ST. There's a reason that engine came with a 5-speed...many close-ratio (relatively) gears help wring useable performance out of that curve. If the 3-speed is anything like the 4-speed, you've got fairly widely separated gears, which means it's going to take considerably longer to get the silvertop into its 'natural range'.

I'd say find an Automatic Silvertop and swap that in, if I was keeping it auto that would probably be the best way to go since everything you need would be right there, including the transmission.
