Change the oil every 3K and put gas in it. And have fun. Seriously, when I got my 01 Corolla I got a trans flush, coolant flush, and an oil change and the car ran like brand new. Good luck with your car.

98, is that with the 4A/7A-FE? if so I'd do the timingbelt asap.
Then just do the basic fixes and they are pretty much bomb proof.

Change oil frequently and don't let it sludge up. If it's not too late.

It turns overdrive on/off. In normal conditions, leave overdrive on for best fuel economy. If you are going down a steep grade and want to use the engine for engine braking, turn it off. You would also turn off if you were towing with the car, but most people avoid towing with a Corolla (for good reasons).
