need help with this engine identification vw adapter

I have this engine and not sure of # on the engine. You can see the adapter to mate it to a vw trans. I was told its a carby from a 85 corolla. I would like to find a later engine with FI and install it. I have done a few swaps already.

I was wondering what other toyota motors would use this same bolt pattern to the tranny and the same flywheel bolt pattern as this engine. I think this one is getting tired and would even use the some one but just seeing what is out there. If you guys could direct me in the right direction being this is a newer corrola forum I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

If the engine really is from an 85 Corolla, then it's most likely a 4A-C. That means, you've got LOTS of choices for a better engine. Pretty much any Corolla engine up to 1997 should go in with minimal trouble.

No, not all the flywheels are the same, but all the naturally aspirated variants should have the same number of splines on the transmission input shaft.

I dont think the transmission input shaft will be a issue being I am using a vw tranny to mate up to the adapter. The flywheel is modified to use a vw clutch which are cheap and everywhere. The main thing is the 6 bolt flywheel and the adapter mating to the engine.

Is there anyway to find out what engines use the 6 bolt? It says right in the book from Kennedy Engineering that some will use a 8 bolt flywheel and 6 bolt. The book says (Tercel, MR2 to '89, '84+ corolla, '85+ chevy nova) So I guess I mainly need to know how to find out which ones are 6 bolt(besides cracking them apart).

Am I in the right forums also?

Just be on the lookout for a 4A-FE (1.6L, non gt-s) or a 7A-FE (1.8L) from a Corolla. I'm unsure if the 7A-FE uses the same flywheel, but the clutch kits are the same, so I'd gather that they share flywheels as well.

My only worry would be that the bolt circles on the flywheels would be different between the one you have and the newer model ones.

Is there no possibility of modifying another flywheel to fit the VW application? The 8 bolt (4A-GE) engines are more performance oriented than the 6 bolt ones.

It would cost me $200+ just for another flywheel. I am mainly just wanting to go EFI. I dont want to do any standalone though. I am not sure what this will go in yet. Thank you for the info though. I will keep my eye out for those engines. maybe go to a junkyard and see if they have them broke apart and see if they fit. Where is the engine cone on the block?

Engine CODE. sorry. Thanks again for all this info. Is there a site dedicated to these engines? Or am I here already.

I suggest people check out the Kennedy Engineesing website if they are interested in making a aircooled VW into a water cooled car. I will post pics of m,y turbo v6 nissan baja for you guys to check out.

Well, for the 6 bolt (economy) engines, there really isn't a site dedicated to them. So yeah, this place is probably your best bet IMO. Identifying the engines is pretty dead simple, you don't have to find the engine code on the block unless the head is off already. Open the hood of any 1988-1997 Corolla.

You want the engine that looks like

or

If the valve covers look like

Then it's the 8 bolt.

To be honest, I would rather have the 8 bolt though. Out of the box, it's a better engine for performance. Plus, there are a lot more options open to you if and when you decide to start modifying it.

I might just put this setup in a bus so it should have more hp and torque than any bus engine. plus it will be toyota reliable then which is good by me. I like the looks of that second engine. I will keep my eyes open for one of these then.
